Product Details

Obi Bag Rikyu is a beautiful, floral Boston-style bag made from a carefully selected vintage Nishijin-ori obi sash.

This distinctive bag features motifs of characteristic Shosoin patterns (*) of the Kamon (family crest) and the auspicious Hoo-mon (phoenix).

What are Shosoin patterns?

The Shosoin is the large storehouse (storehouse of the imperial court) of Todaiji Temple that was built during the Nara period. It has stored over 100,000 pieces of dyed and woven textiles, which are generally referred to as "Shosoin-kire."

In a narrow sense, these textiles are described as Shosoin patterns, but in a broader sense, Shosoin patterns refer to the patterns of valuable items such as instruments and furnishings stored in the Shosoin, including Horyuji textiles.

The outer material is made from a Nishijin-ori obi sash, and the lining is made from the lining of the same obi sash.

With flap pockets on both sides, zippered inner pockets, and custom double zippers, this bag is exceptional in both design and practicality.

Top-class experienced Japanese craftsmen draw out the special characteristics of each obi sash through their fabric sewing technique (*) by modifying the pattern according to the material and carefully creating one piece at a time.
